Lightning Strikes and Softsuns have been used in 100’s of productions for Television and Commercials. The Softsun line of lights are becoming increasingly popular as the “workhorse” light of choice instead of using HMI’s. Many DP’s and Gaffers on Episodics and commercials have traded in their HMI’s for SoftSun lights because of their superior features and color rendering.
In addition, from the 8K Paparazzi Flash to the 250K Lightning Strikes, the full line of Lightning Strikes Equipment is the industry standard for producing a controlled lightning effect or fast strobe effect.

In this Nike Golf commercial using 50K SoftSun lights, the SoftSun was conveniently rigged on a Western Dolly with Supercranks. This allowed the 50K to be easily moved to the many shooting positions on the golf course… pulled by a golf cart!
The primary reason the 50K was chosen over other daylight sources was due to it’s flicker free operation while shooting high speed photography.
A day exterior shoot brings numerous challenges. Because the 50K SoftSun is dimmable it is an invaluable tool while trying to chase the sun in and out of the clouds.

In this national Bass Pro Shops television commercial using 50K SoftSun lights, two lights were used to simulate daylight as the light was moved moved from one side of the Bass Pro Shops store to the other side.
The 50K SoftSun lights were rigged on a 200 foot crane that reached out over the Bass Pro Shops building and into the glass atrium of the store. As the crane moved the lights from one side of the atrium to the other, the two 50K SoftSun lights simulated daylight coming through the windows of the store for different times of day.
The SoftSun 50K lights enabled the production to be shot in the evening (even though the spots needed daylight), rather than during the daytime, thus eliminating the need to disrupt the regular store operation.
